Around 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.
Police say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then found numerous other smeared cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests indicate the fluid was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; authorities are presently not informed of any physical harm in association with the event," they stated.
City officials said they were trying "to solve the case" and have requested to the residents for tips.
A high-ranking official stated the attack rendered him stunned and required to be resolved rapidly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on online, referring to the murder of nine victims by a shooter targeting people of immigrant origin in 2020.
