Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the possibility of his move to embassies near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of organizing to request asylum through a embassy office", a statement said.

The court filing emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist US President Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

He is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that the former president be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which included plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The police stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
